More Than a Glasses Number

Why Does a Detailed Eye Checkup Matter?

A comprehensive eye examination does far more than update your glasses number. Many sight-threatening conditions — glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration — develop silently, with no early symptoms, and are picked up only on a detailed, dilated exam.

At Dayal Eye Centre, a single visit checks your vision, the front of the eye and the retina, and screens for these conditions — so anything that needs attention is caught early and explained to you clearly. Whether it is a routine check, new blurring, headaches and screen strain, or a diabetic’s yearly retina review, it starts here.

A Guide by Age & Risk

Who Should Get an Eye Checkup, and How Often?

Everyone — not just people who wear glasses. Use this as a general guide; your specialist will confirm the right schedule for your eyes.

WhoSuggested frequencyWhy
Children (school age)At least once, then as advisedDetects squint, lazy eye & refractive error early, when treatment works best
Adults 18–40Every 2 yearsYearly if you wear glasses/lenses or have high screen time — updates power; catches early strain, dryness & refractive change
Adults 40+Every 1–2 yearsScreens for glaucoma, early cataract & presbyopia
Adults 60+YearlyCataract, glaucoma & retinal disease become more common
Diabetics (any age)Yearly dilated retina checkDiabetic retinopathy is silent early and sight-threatening if missed
Family history of glaucoma / eye diseaseYearly from 40Higher lifetime risk warrants closer monitoring — earlier if advised

Recommended checkup frequency is general guidance; your specialist will advise the right schedule based on your eyes, age and history.

Your Visit, Step by Step

What to Expect on the Day — and How Long Does It Take?

A comprehensive exam usually takes about 45–90 minutes, depending on which tests your specialist advises. Every finding is shown to you on screen and explained in plain language before you leave.

Dilation & driving

If your eyes are dilated, vision stays blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours. Please arrange not to drive yourself home, and bring sunglasses.

Every scan in your checkup runs on the centre’s own diagnostic suite — the same platforms we use to plan cataract, LASIK and retina treatment.

Saving Sights, Saving Lives

Do You Offer a Free Eye Checkup?

We do — but you’ll find it in the villages, not as a promotion inside our hospital. At Dayal Eye Centre, free eye checkups are part of our community outreach, run through the 15–20 free eye-care camps we hold every month across rural and underserved areas of Gurgaon and the wider Delhi-NCR, under our “Saving Sights, Saving Lives” programme.

These camps bring screening to people who might otherwise go without it — whether because of distance, cost, or simply not knowing help is close by.

Why we keep it that way

A “free checkup” can easily become a way to bring people through the door and sell them things they don’t need. That isn’t how we work. Our free screenings exist where they genuinely help — in the community — and our care is judged by our patients’ outcomes, not by our marketing. We don’t push services you don’t need, and we don’t build our reputation on offers. We build it on the people we’ve treated over more than two decades.

At our camps

Screening is carried out by our qualified doctors and clinical team — checking vision and looking for common, sight-threatening conditions early. Anyone who needs further evaluation or treatment is guided to our hospital, where our senior specialists take over their care personally.

At our hospital, you’re always seen by a senior specialist

Your examination isn’t handed to a trainee. Every patient is examined by an experienced, senior eye specialist, on advanced diagnostic technology, with the time to explain what we find and what it means for you. And we go beyond the checkup — we stay with you through diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, so nothing is left half-done. Your eyes are looked after as if they were our own.

If you’d like a comprehensive, specialist-led eye examination — or want to host or support a community camp in your area — we’d be glad to help.

Eye Checkup in Gurgaon — Frequently Asked Questions

Usually about 45–90 minutes, depending on which tests your specialist advises. Allow extra time if your eyes are dilated.

A detailed exam often includes dilating drops for a clear view of the retina. Vision stays blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours afterwards, so please arrange not to drive yourself home and bring sunglasses.

As a general guide: every 1–2 years for most adults, yearly after 60 or if you are diabetic, and at least once in childhood. Your specialist will advise the right schedule for you.

A shop eye test mainly measures your glasses power. A comprehensive examination at an eye hospital also screens the front of the eye and the retina for conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

We recommend booking so a senior specialist and the right diagnostic tests are ready for you. Call or WhatsApp +91 81786 39701, or book online.

Cashless treatment is available across empanelled insurers, TPAs and government/PSU schemes (CGHS, ECHS, Ayushman Bharat/PM-JAY, Haryana Govt.), and Easy EMI via Savein for eligible treatments. Please confirm your specific coverage with our team.

Yes — our paediatric & squint specialist checks children’s vision, eye alignment and lazy eye. Early checks matter because treatment works best when started young.

An eye checkup screens for common eye conditions and supports early detection; it is not a substitute for personalised medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Please consult our doctors about your specific condition.
