How Are We Best for SMILE Surgery in Gurgaon?

Diagnosis Before SMILE Surgery

Careful selection is the single biggest safety factor in laser vision correction, so we never skip steps. Before we approve you for SMILE, you go through a structured pre-surgical work-up:

01

Comprehensive Eye Checkup

We first rule out conditions — such as glaucoma (kala motia) or early cataract (motiyabind) — that would change the surgical plan.

02

Corneal Mapping and Topography

Advanced imaging, including the OCULUS Pentacam, maps the shape, curvature and thickness of your cornea and screens for abnormalities such as early keratoconus.

03

Measurement of Refractive Error

We measure your myopia and astigmatism precisely to confirm your power sits within the range SMILE is designed to treat.

04

Pupil Size Assessment

Pupil size is measured, especially in dim light, to plan the treatment zone and reduce night-time glare and haloes after surgery.

05

Ocular Surface and Tear Film Evaluation

We check for dry eye and tear-film quality — an unstable surface affects comfort and healing, and must be treated before surgery, not discovered after it.

06

Endothelial Cell Count

Specular microscopy counts the cells of the cornea’s inner layer; a low count changes the risk picture and can rule out surgery.

07

Retinal and Optic Nerve Health

OCT imaging and a retinal examination confirm the back of your eye is healthy before any laser correction.

08

Prescription Stability

We verify your glasses number has been stable for around a year — operating on a still-changing prescription risks an unsatisfying result.

Overview

What Is SMILE Surgery?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a flapless, bladeless laser procedure that corrects refractive errors — mainly nearsightedness (myopia), with or without astigmatism. Instead of creating a flap on the cornea (the clear front window of the eye), the laser shapes a thin disc of tissue — a lenticule — inside the cornea, which your surgeon removes through a small keyhole opening. This changes the corneal curve so light focuses properly on the retina, reducing your need for corrective eyewear.

What Causes Refractive Errors?

Myopia (Nearsightedness): Often inherited, usually develops in childhood and tends to progress through the teenage years.

Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Can also run in families; often seen in children and may reduce as the eye grows.

Presbyopia: An age-related change — the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible after about 40, making near work harder.

Astigmatism: An unevenly curved cornea, causing blurred or distorted vision at all distances.

What are the Symptoms of Refractive Errors?

Uncorrected refractive error is common — an estimated 10.2% of Indians live with it. If these symptoms sound familiar, an eye examination at Dayal Eye Centre is the right first step. Source: Honavar, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2019.

Types of SMILE Surgery

ReLEx SMILE (ZEISS VisuMax)

The established, most widely performed form of lenticule extraction, and the procedure we offer at Dayal Eye Centre — a single femtosecond laser shapes and frees the lenticule, removed through the 2–4 mm keyhole.

Newer Lenticule-Extraction Platforms

The same keyhole principle is now offered on other platforms (for example, SILK). Which platform suits you is a clinical decision made after your corneal mapping and examination.

Surface and Flap Alternatives

If testing shows SMILE is not ideal for your cornea, PRK, Epi-Contoura, LASIK or Contoura Vision may suit you better. Our surgeons will tell you honestly which route fits your eyes.

The Only Eye Hospital in Gurgaon To Have Contoura and SMILE Under One Roof

Having both the ZEISS VisuMax (flapless ReLEx SMILE) and the Alcon WaveLight EX500 (topography-guided Contoura Vision) in one operating suite means we can match the procedure to your eyes, rather than fitting every eye to a single machine. After your diagnostics, our surgeons recommend the technique your cornea and prescription actually favour — SMILE, LASIK, Contoura Vision or a surface procedure.

LASIK Surgery

A time-tested laser vision correction that treats myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism under a thin corneal flap.

Creates the lenticule inside the cornea in seconds

We perform SMILE on the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser — a high-precision platform for minimally invasive correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. The VisuMax creates the lenticule inside the cornea in seconds, and the 2–4 mm keyhole incision preserves more of the corneal surface and its nerves than flap-based techniques — an approach research links with fewer early dry-eye symptoms. Who Should Undergo SMILE Surgery?

Suitability depends on a detailed evaluation, and not every patient qualifies. If SMILE is not right for you, we will say so — and guide you to the alternative that is, whether that is LASIK, Contoura Vision or a surface procedure.

Am I a Candidate? Book Your Assessment

Minimum age: 18 years or older.

Stable prescription: Your glasses number should have been stable for around the past year.

Nearsightedness: SMILE typically treats myopia from about −1 to −10 D.

Astigmatism: Generally up to about 3 D.

Eye health: An adequately thick, healthy cornea.

Avoid if: You have glaucoma, keratoconus, uncontrolled diabetes, significant untreated dry eye or active eye allergy.

Not during: Pregnancy or breastfeeding — surgery can be scheduled afterwards.

Care at Every Step

How Are We the Best for Vision Correction in Gurgaon?

SMILE Surgery Procedure

1

Numbing and preparation: Anaesthetic drops numb the eye — you feel pressure and awareness rather than sharp pain — and a gentle eyelid holder keeps it steady.

2

Shaping the lenticule: The ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser shapes a thin disc of tissue (the lenticule) inside your cornea in seconds, along with a small 2–4 mm keyhole opening. No flap is cut.

3

Removing the lenticule: Your surgeon draws the lenticule out through the keyhole, changing the curve of the cornea to correct your power.

4

Walking out the same day: SMILE is a daycare procedure — the laser step takes minutes per eye. Plan a couple of hours at the centre and have someone accompany you home.

Benefits of SMILE Surgery

Flapless and bladeless: Correction through a 2–4 mm keyhole — no corneal flap to create, lift or dislodge, which is reassuring for athletes and active people.

Gentler on the tear film: Research associates SMILE with fewer early dry-eye signs and symptoms than flap-based FS-LASIK. Source: Kobashi et al., 2017, Cornea.

Quick return to routine: Most patients are back to daily activities within 1–2 days, with simple early precautions around make-up, swimming and contact sports.

Long-term stability: A 7-year follow-up study of SMILE reported a mean refractive change of just −0.34 D; age-related changes such as presbyopia can still develop later. Source: Damgaard et al., 2021.

High satisfaction with laser vision correction: A peer-reviewed review of 2,198 patients reported 95.4% satisfaction after LASIK, the most-studied laser vision correction. Source: Solomon et al., 2009, Ophthalmology.

Individual results vary based on eye condition, prescription/power range, corneal thickness, age, overall eye health and healing response.

Recovery Tips

Attend every follow-up — free for the first month — so we can confirm healing before you resume make-up, swimming or contact sports.

Use your prescribed drops exactly as directed; avoid rubbing your eyes or dusty environments in the early weeks.

Light activity such as walking is fine within days; avoid anything that raises eye pressure or involves prolonged head-down positions until cleared.

Avoid alcohol and smoking during early healing — both can worsen dryness and slow recovery; ask your surgeon when it is reasonable to resume.

Return to high-intensity sport and cosmetic procedures (like hair colouring) only after your follow-up confirms healing.

Risk of SMILE Surgery

SMILE is a well-studied procedure and serious complications are uncommon in well-selected patients, but no surgery is entirely without risk. Possible risks include:

Temporary night-vision disturbance (glare, haloes)

Infection

Inflammation

Hazy vision during healing

Dry eyes

Under- or over-correction

Retained tissue fragments (debris)

Corneal weakening (ectasia) in unsuitable corneas

Very rarely, serious vision loss

If fine-tuning is ever needed, published Indian data report an enhancement rate of about 0.5% after SMILE, usually done as a surface procedure since there is no flap. Source: Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2023.

All surgical and laser procedures carry inherent risks, and not all patients are suitable candidates for every procedure. Your surgeon will discuss individual risks and benefits during your consultation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

SMILE is a well-established procedure with strong published outcomes. A 7-year follow-up study reported a mean refractive change of only −0.34 D, showing good long-term stability, and Indian registry data report an enhancement (re-treatment) rate of about 0.5%. Your own result depends on your eyes, which is why we assess candidacy carefully first.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. SMILE is flapless and often preferred by dry-eye-prone and very active patients, while LASIK treats a wider range of powers, including farsightedness. Consult with our doctors — your corneal mapping and prescription decide the safer choice.

SMILE is performed under numbing eye drops, so most patients feel pressure and awareness rather than pain during the short procedure. Mild grittiness, watering or light sensitivity for a day or two afterwards is common and settles with the prescribed drops.

For most suitable patients the correction is long-lasting — a published 7-year follow-up found an average change of just −0.34 D. However, age-related changes such as presbyopia or cataract can still affect vision later in life, so reading glasses may be needed with age.

Rest your eyes and avoid screens for the first 24 hours. Most people return to laptop work within a day or two, taking frequent breaks and using lubricating drops, as vision can fluctuate while the eyes heal.

SMILE corrects vision through a tiny 2–4 mm keyhole incision with no corneal flap, while LASIK works under a thin flap that is created and lifted. SMILE preserves more of the corneal surface and its nerves, which research links with fewer early dry-eye symptoms.

Often, yes. Because SMILE is flapless and disturbs fewer surface nerves, it is frequently chosen by dry-eye-prone patients and contact-sport players — there is no flap that can be dislodged. Significant dry eye still needs to be assessed and stabilised before surgery.

SMILE at Dayal Eye Centre starts from ₹1,25,000, with a typical total estimate of about ₹1,13,000–₹1,46,000. All figures are starting-from ranges, subject to an individual consultation and eye examination. See our SMILE cost page for the full breakdown and Easy EMI options.
