Overview

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, is the tired, uncomfortable feeling that builds up during and after prolonged screen use. It happens because we blink less at screens — which dries the eyes — hold focus at a fixed distance for long periods, and often use screens in poor lighting or at the wrong distance.

Indian studies report digital eye strain in roughly half to over 90% of frequent screen users, with symptoms rising sharply as screen time increases. Reassuringly, it does not usually cause permanent damage — but it does affect comfort and productivity, and can unmask an uncorrected glasses power or dry eye that is worth treating.

Quick Facts

Very common — reported in roughly half to over 90% of frequent screen users.

Not usually permanent damage — the discomfort is real but reversible with the right measures.

Manageable — and it can unmask an uncorrected glasses power or dry eye worth treating.

Prevalence figures: Indian studies of frequent screen users (Bahkir 2020; Kaur 2021; CVS meta-analyses).

Symptoms

What Are the Symptoms?

Discomfort usually builds through the day and eases with rest. If any of these are frequent or affecting your work, an eye check is worthwhile.

Tired, aching or heavy eyes

Dryness, burning or watering

Blurred vision, especially late in the day

Headaches and difficulty refocusing

Neck and shoulder discomfort

Treatment & Prevention

How Do We Treat and Prevent It?

Relief starts with finding the cause, then simple, effective steps that fit your day. Most people improve quickly once the right basics are corrected.

The 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes of screen work, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It relaxes the focusing muscles, prompts blinking, and eases both strain and dryness.

1

Correct the Basics

An up-to-date glasses check — including for screen distance — and treating any dry eye. This alone resolves most screen-related discomfort.

2

The 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to relax the focusing muscles and prompt blinking.

3

Screen Ergonomics

Good lighting, the screen slightly below eye level and an arm’s length away, and conscious blinking through the day.

4

Lubricating Drops

Where dryness is contributing, the right lubricating drops keep the eye surface comfortable during long sessions.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions patients ask us most. For anything specific to your eyes, a consultation gives the clearest answer.

Digital eye strain doesn’t usually cause permanent damage to the eyes — the discomfort is real but reversible with the right measures. However, screen strain can reveal an uncorrected glasses power or dry eye that’s worth treating, and heavy screen use is linked to rising short-sight in children.

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing muscles and prompts blinking, which reduces strain and dryness. It’s simple and genuinely effective.

Evidence that blue-light-blocking glasses reduce eye strain is limited. More reliable steps are correcting your glasses power, treating dry eye, taking regular breaks and improving screen ergonomics. We’ll advise what will actually help you.

We blink far less when concentrating on screens, so the eye’s surface dries out — a major cause of screen-related discomfort. Conscious blinking, breaks and lubricating drops help, and we treat any underlying dry eye.

If strain is frequent, affects your work, comes with persistent headaches or blurring, or doesn’t improve with breaks, have an eye check. It may point to an uncorrected prescription or dry eye that’s easily treated.
