Understanding the Procedure

What Is Blepharoplasty, and Who Is It For?

Blepharoplasty is surgery to remove or reposition excess skin, muscle and fat of the eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty addresses heavy, hooded upper lids; lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags and puffiness.

It suits people bothered by a tired, aged eye appearance, and is medically indicated when sagging upper-lid skin (dermatochalasis) droops far enough to block the upper field of vision — in which case it may be covered by insurance.

Who It’s For
Heavy, hooded upper lids

Excess upper-lid skin that makes the eyes look tired or aged.

Under-eye bags & puffiness

Lower-lid bagginess that a good night’s sleep no longer fixes.

A tired, aged eye appearance

A refreshed, more rested look while keeping a natural result.

Vision blocked by drooping skin

Dermatochalasis heavy enough to affect your field of vision — a functional case that may be covered by insurance.

Procedure & Recovery

What Happens During the Procedure and Recovery?

Blepharoplasty is usually a day-care procedure under local anaesthesia. Incisions are placed in the natural upper-lid crease or just below the lower lashes (or inside the lid), so scars are well hidden. Most people return to normal activities within a week or two.

Expect some bruising and swelling for the first week, settling over a few weeks. We give you a clear aftercare plan.

Recovery Timeline
Day 0

Day-care surgery under local anaesthesia; incisions hidden in the natural lid creases. Home the same day.

Week 1

Bruising and swelling are most noticeable; most people return to normal activities within one to two weeks.

Weeks 2–6

Swelling steadily settles and the eye area starts to look refreshed. We follow your recovery with a clear aftercare plan.

2–3 months

The final, natural-looking result appears as healing completes. Results vary by individual.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Cosmetic blepharoplasty is usually self-pay. If excess upper-lid skin droops enough to block your vision (proven on a visual-field test), functional blepharoplasty may be covered, subject to your policy. We’ll assess and tell you honestly.

Incisions are hidden in the natural upper-lid crease or just under the lower lashes (or inside the lid), so scarring is usually minimal and discreet once healed.

It’s done under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel pain during it. Afterwards there’s usually mild discomfort, bruising and swelling for a few days, managed with simple measures.

Most people return to normal activities within one to two weeks; bruising and swelling settle over a few weeks, with the final result appearing over a couple of months.

Because an oculoplastic surgeon plans the surgery around eye function and facial balance, results are aimed at a refreshed, natural look — not an operated appearance. Results vary by individual.
