Does glaucoma lead to blindness?

It can if undetected and untreated - glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, especially over 60. With early diagnosis and pressure-lowering treatment, most people keep useful vision. The key is catching it before symptoms appear.

What are the first signs of glaucoma?

Open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, usually has no early signs - it's called the 'silent thief of sight'. Side (peripheral) vision loss may appear later. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is sudden and an emergency: severe eye pain, blurred vision, halos and nausea.

Is glaucoma hereditary?

Family history is one of the strongest risk factors, so glaucoma has a hereditary component. If a close relative has it, have your eye pressure and optic nerve checked regularly from around age 40.

What causes glaucoma?

It's usually caused by raised pressure inside the eye when fluid doesn't drain properly, which damages the optic nerve. Types include open-angle, angle-closure, congenital and secondary glaucoma (from injury, diabetes, steroids or other conditions).

Will I need to use eye drops forever?

Often, yes - glaucoma is usually lifelong, and drops are commonly long-term. If they become difficult or don't control pressure, laser or surgery (including MIGS) can reduce or replace them. Your specialist finds the right balance.

Can glaucoma surgery restore lost vision?

No - treatment lowers eye pressure to protect the vision you still have; it cannot restore vision already lost, because optic-nerve damage is permanent. Early treatment is what makes the biggest difference.

Is glaucoma surgery safe?

It's well established and generally safe, though like any surgery it carries some risks (bleeding, infection, pressure too low), which your surgeon discusses. For most people, protecting vision outweighs these risks; we assess each case individually.

MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) lowers eye pressure through very small incisions, with faster recovery than traditional surgery. It's often combined with cataract surgery and can be an earlier surgical option for suitable patients.
