Know Your Cornea

What Does the Cornea Do, and When Should You Worry?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outer layer that covers the front of the eye and focuses light so you can see. Because it is exposed, it is vulnerable to infection, injury, drying and inherited change — and because it is central to focusing, any damage can affect vision.

See a cornea specialist promptly if you have redness, eye pain, light sensitivity, watering, or blurred vision that doesn’t clear — and urgently for a painful red eye with discharge, which can be a corneal ulcer.

Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

See one for a red, painful or light-sensitive eye, persistent watering, blurred vision that doesn’t clear, or a known condition like keratoconus. A painful red eye with discharge or a white spot on the cornea is urgent — it can be a corneal ulcer.

Most corneal conditions are very treatable, especially when caught early — from drops for dry eye and infection, to cross-linking for keratoconus, to transplantation for advanced damage. The right treatment depends on the specific condition.

Not always. Many conditions (dry eye, early infection) are managed medically. Others — keratoconus, pterygium, advanced dystrophy or scarring — may need cross-linking or surgery. We advise the least invasive effective option.

Dr. Hem Shah, a cornea and phaco surgeon with sub-specialty training in cornea and anterior segment from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. She treats keratoconus, dry eye, corneal infection and dystrophy, and performs cross-linking and corneal transplantation.

Most medically necessary corneal treatments are covered, subject to your policy. We offer cashless treatment across empanelled insurers and TPAs, government schemes and Easy EMI.
