About Squint

What Is a Squint, and Why Treat It?

A squint is a misalignment where one eye turns in, out, up or down while the other looks straight ahead. It can be constant or come and go, and may be present from childhood or develop later. In children, an untreated squint can lead to lazy eye (amblyopia) because the brain suppresses the misaligned eye.

Treating a squint restores alignment and appearance, protects or restores binocular vision (using both eyes together), and in adults can relieve double vision and improve confidence.

Why Treat a Squint?

Restores straight, aligned eyes and appearance

Protects or restores binocular vision in children

Relieves double vision and boosts confidence in adults

Treatment Options

How Is a Squint Treated?

Treatment follows a ladder - from glasses and therapy to surgery - matched to the type and cause of the squint.

TreatmentWhat it does
GlassesCorrect refractive error that causes or worsens some squints
Amblyopia (lazy-eye) therapyPatching or drops to strengthen the weaker eye first
Eye exercises / prismsFor selected squint types and double vision
BotoxRelaxes an overactive muscle in selected cases
Squint surgeryAdjusts the eye muscles to align the eyes

Squint surgery is a safe, common day-care procedure that repositions the eye muscles; in some cases adjustable sutures allow fine-tuning. Reported success rates for paediatric squint surgery are around 70-90%, and some eyes need more than one procedure.

*Individual results vary; the right treatment depends on the type and cause of squint and the child's or adult's needs. Consult with our doctors.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

No - a true squint doesn’t simply go away and needs assessment, because an untreated squint in a child can cause lazy eye (permanent reduced vision). Some newborns have a brief, normal wandering of the eyes, but a persistent or noticeable squint should be checked.

Yes - squint can be corrected at any age. In adults it improves eye alignment and appearance, can relieve double vision, and often boosts confidence. It’s a common, safe day-care procedure.

Squint surgery is a well-established, generally safe day-care procedure. It’s done under anaesthesia (general for children, often local for adults), so there’s no pain during it; the eye may feel sore and look red for a week or two afterwards.

Reported success rates are around 70-90% for good alignment; some eyes need a second procedure or ongoing glasses/exercises. Your specialist will explain the likely outcome for the specific type of squint.

Squint correction is usually medically necessary and often covered, subject to your policy. We offer cashless options, government schemes and Easy EMI.
