Overview

What Is an Ocular Prosthesis?

An ocular prosthesis (artificial eye) is a custom-made shell that sits over an orbital implant in the eye socket, matched in colour and detail to your other eye. When an eye is removed (enucleation or evisceration), an implant is placed to give volume and movement, and a prosthesis is fitted once healing is complete.

The goal is a natural, symmetrical appearance and comfortable long-term wear. At Dayal Eye Centre, this is delivered as part of our oculoplasty service in Gurgaon — from eye-removal surgery through prosthesis fitting and ongoing socket care under one roof.

Movement & a natural look

An orbital implant placed at the time of eye removal transmits movement to the prosthesis, improving both motility and cosmesis — so the artificial eye moves broadly in step with your natural eye.

American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).

The Process

What Does the Process Involve?

If eye removal is needed, this is done first and an implant placed. After healing, a custom prosthesis is crafted and fitted, then refined for colour, movement and comfort. We also care for the socket long-term and manage any prosthesis adjustments over the years.

01

Eye Removal (If Needed)

Where the eye cannot be saved, enucleation or evisceration is performed first and an orbital implant placed to restore volume and movement.

02

Healing

The socket is given time to settle and heal before a prosthesis is fitted, so the final result is comfortable and stable.

03

Custom Prosthesis Fitting

A custom ocular prosthesis is crafted and fitted, then refined for colour, movement and comfort to match your other eye.

04

Long-Term Socket Care

We care for the socket over the years and manage prosthesis adjustments — polishing or remaking it as needed to keep the fit and look good.

Socket problems can be corrected too. An anophthalmic socket that fits poorly or has contracted can be reconstructed to improve prosthesis fit — see eye socket reconstruction.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions patients and families ask us most about artificial eyes. For anything specific to your situation, a consultation gives the clearest answer.

A custom ocular prosthesis is matched to your other eye in colour and detail and sits over an implant that gives it movement, so it looks natural and moves with your other eye. Results vary, but modern custom prostheses are very lifelike.

Yes, to a degree — the orbital implant placed at the time of eye removal transmits movement to the prosthesis, so it moves broadly in step with your natural eye.

We teach you how to clean and handle the prosthesis and care for the socket, and we review it periodically. Prostheses are polished and occasionally remade over the years to keep the fit and appearance good.

Medically necessary eye removal and reconstruction are usually covered, subject to your policy; the prosthesis itself may be partly covered. We help you understand what your policy allows.

At Dayal Eye Centre, our oculoplastic surgeon (Dr. Saurbhi Khurana) manages eye removal, orbital implants and prosthesis care, working with an ocularist for the custom prosthesis.
