Cornea Condition

Pterygium Treatment in Gurgaon

A pterygium is a fleshy, pinkish growth on the white of the eye that can spread onto the cornea, causing redness, irritation and, if it grows far enough, blurred vision. At Dayal Eye Centre, our cornea specialist removes pterygium with a graft technique that restores comfort and appearance while keeping the recurrence risk low.

Understanding the Condition

What Is a Pterygium, and Why Does It Form?

A pterygium is a wing-shaped growth of tissue that starts on the white of the eye (the conjunctiva) and can extend onto the cornea. It is benign — not cancer — but it can grow, redden, cause a gritty feeling, and, if it reaches far enough across the cornea, distort or block vision.

Pterygium is linked to long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, wind and dust, so it is common in sunny, dusty environments. Protecting the eyes with UV sunglasses helps prevent it and slows regrowth after surgery.

Quick Facts
Benign, not cancer

A growth of the eye’s own conjunctival tissue — not a tumour.

Often ‘surfer’s eye’

Linked to long-term UV light, wind and dust exposure.

UV protection helps

Sunglasses slow its growth and reduce regrowth after surgery.

Symptoms

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms depend on the size of the pterygium and how far it has grown onto the cornea. If you notice any of these, an examination confirms whether treatment is needed.

A visible fleshy growth on the white of the eye.

Redness and irritation, a gritty or foreign-body feeling.

Watering and, at times, cosmetic concern.

Blurred vision or astigmatism if it grows onto the cornea.

Treatment Options

How We Treat Pterygium

Small, quiet pterygia may just be monitored and soothed with drops. When a pterygium is growing, uncomfortable, cosmetically bothersome or affecting vision, surgery is the definitive treatment.

ApproachWhat it’s for
Lubricants & UV protectionFor mild, non-progressive cases — and to protect the eye after surgery.
Pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograftThe pterygium is removed and a graft of your own tissue covers the area, markedly lowering the chance of recurrence compared with removal alone.

Pterygium Surgery with Conjunctival Autograft

The pterygium is removed and a small graft of your own tissue is placed to cover the area — this markedly lowers the chance of it coming back compared with removal alone. It is a day-care procedure performed under local anaesthesia by our cornea specialist.

Pterygium can recur, which is why the graft technique is used to reduce that risk; no surgery can guarantee it will never return. Individual results vary; consult with our doctors.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A pterygium is benign — not cancer. It usually grows slowly, but if it extends across the cornea it can affect vision, and it can be red and uncomfortable. If a growth looks unusual or changes quickly, we examine it carefully to be sure.

No. Small, stable pterygia are often just monitored and soothed with lubricants and UV protection. Surgery is recommended when it grows, becomes uncomfortable, affects vision, or is cosmetically bothersome.

It can recur, which is why we use a graft of your own tissue to cover the area — this significantly lowers the recurrence risk compared with simple removal. Wearing UV sunglasses afterwards also helps.

The surgery is done under local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during it. Afterwards the eye can feel gritty and sore for a few days while it heals, which settles with drops.

When done for medical reasons (discomfort or vision), it is often covered, subject to your policy; purely cosmetic removal may not be. We offer cashless options and Easy EMI.
