Overview

What Is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye disease happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly — often because the oil glands in the eyelids (meibomian glands) aren’t working well. The result is a gritty, burning, tired feeling, and paradoxically, watery eyes as they over-produce reflex tears.

How common is it? Indian studies report dry eye in a wide range — a north Indian hospital study found around 32% of patients affected — and a large LVPEI analysis projects dry eye disease will affect around 275 million people in India. Long screen hours, air-conditioning and contact-lens wear all make it worse.

Quick facts
One of the most common eye complaints — and one of the most treatable.
Screens, air-conditioning and contact lenses all make it worse.
Watery eyes are often a sign of dryness, not the opposite.
Left untreated, it can damage the surface of the eye.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Most dry eye is a long-term condition that is managed rather than cured — but with the right treatment, symptoms can be controlled very well so your eyes feel comfortable. Treating the underlying cause (like oil-gland dysfunction) gives the most lasting relief.

It sounds contradictory, but watery eyes are a classic sign of dry eye — when the surface is irritated, the eye floods with reflex tears that don’t stay on the eye. Treating the dryness usually settles the watering.

Most dry eye is treated medically. Small procedures such as punctal plugs (to keep tears on the eye) can help; surgery is rarely needed. We start with the least invasive option that works for you.

Yes — we blink less when looking at screens, which dries the eye. Regular breaks, blinking, good lighting and treating any gland dysfunction all help. We’ll give you practical steps alongside any drops.

Consultations and medical management are often out-of-pocket, while procedures may be covered depending on your policy. We offer cashless options and Easy EMI where applicable.
