Operating Theatre

Operation theatre
An operating theatre is a designated area where certain invasive surgical procedures take place. This may entail either open surgery, in which larger incisions are made to reach the internal organs, or minimally invasive techniques like keyhole surgery, in which cameras and a laparoscope are placed through small incisions.
Most operating rooms specialise in a particular surgical procedure, like neurosurgery or heart surgery. Every room has bright lights, an operating table where the patients are operated on, an electrocardiograph machine to monitor the patient’s heart rate, and surgical suction machines to remove blood from the area around the organs the surgeons are operating on. Additionally, it is crucial for operating rooms to be fully sterile to prevent the transmission of infection.

Who Works in an Operating Theatre?

The following professionals work in operating theatres:
  • Anaesthetists who provide anaesthesia to reduce discomfort and pain during the surgery
  • Theatre nurses who provide patient care during all four phases of the procedure
  • Operating department staff that oversee the cleanliness and functionality of the operating room and occasionally lend a hand to the doctors during surgery.
  • Theatre support personnel take patients from the wards to the operating room.
  • Radiographers are doctors who take X-rays as needed.
