Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common type of refractive error of the eye. People with myopia can see objects that are close to them clearly, but objects that far away appear blurry. Myopia occurs when the eye is longer than normal or when the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) is too curved, causing light to be focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This can result in blurry vision for distant objects.
The most common symptom of myopia is difficulty seeing objects that are far away. People with myopia may have to squint or strain their eyes to see distant objects. Other symptoms of myopia can include headaches, eye strain, and fatigue after prolonged periods of reading or other close-up work
Myopia is frequently hereditary, meaning that it can be transmitted from parents to offspring. Your likelihood of being nearsighted is higher if one of your parents is.
